The absence of Kohei Asano is the sort of thing that makes a supporter look at the league table and sigh. He has ten goals to his name this season, a tally that usually keeps a team from flirting with the bottom half. Without him until matchday 8, Wellsford Athletic are left trying to find goals in places they usually only look for a lost coin.

It is a peculiar time for the club. They have managed five points from five games, a return that is almost impressive given the current state of the dressing room. It is less of a squad and more of a collection of people who are currently elsewhere. 

The defensive line is particularly thin. Oscar Yarrow is out until matchday 9, and Jeremiah Brideoake is missing until matchday 3. Domingos Cumaru and the goalkeeper, Maycon Brejo-Alegre, are both unavailable until matchday 6. Brejo-Alegre is generally considered one of the league's better keepers, which means the current replacement is likely spending a lot of time explaining why the ball is in the net.

The club has managed one win and two draws so far. It is a fragile existence, relying on players who are currently more useful as names on a list than as bodies on a pitch. Typical really. The picture begins to change on matchday 3 when Brideoake returns, provided the club remembers where he parks his car.
