Jesmond 1–1 Kirkby: Buisma-Veld reaches five
Kirkby FC spent Tuesday 1 September playing out a 1-1 draw with Jesmond AFC. It was a game of moderate intensity and limited imagination. However, Lourens Buisma-Veld managed to find the net. This brings his tally to five.
In a league where Marlborough United are currently operating on another planet, five goals is a figure that invites a certain kind of quiet contemplation. It is not a number that suggests a player is preparing to take over the division (he is playing for Kirkby, after all). It is, however, a decent total for someone who spends a fair amount of the match dodging challenges from defenders who clearly dislike him.
Buisma-Veld does not possess the sort of explosive pace that makes scouts reach for their notebooks. He is more of a persistent presence. He lingers in the box like a guest who has overstayed his welcome, eventually finding a gap when the opposition simply forgets he is there. There is something comforting about that level of efficiency. It is the footballing equivalent of a reliable toaster.
The goal helps Kirkby avoid a defeat, though it does little to disrupt the established order at the top. Wellsford Athletic and Mancunia FC continue to chase Marlborough United with a desperation that feels slightly misplaced given the points gap.
Buisma-Veld will likely return to the pitch soon with the same understated purpose. One can only hope he manages a sixth before the autumn leaves actually start to fall. It would be one for the future, provided that future arrives before the end of the month.
