Jesmond AFC 1–1 Kirkby FC: a mirror image

The scent of damp turf and old tobacco hung heavy over the stands on Tuesday 1 September. It took Jesmond AFC’s gear man 80 minutes to get any real dirt on the shirts, and even then it was mostly from a goalmouth pile-on. This draw had all the pace of a soak in the bath, until it suddenly remembered it was a football match.

The two sides met back in August and produced a 0–0. They spent the first 45 minutes here trying to repeat that, and succeeding. Kirkby, 15th and climbing, looked the likelier side without ever troubling a goalkeeper who might as well have been reading the programme. Jesmond, 12th and out of sorts, passed the ball politely sideways, as if apologising for its existence.

Then, three minutes after the restart, Lourens Buisma-Veld did the thing he has made a small speciality of lately. He scored against Wellsford last week; he did the same here, pouncing on a loose ball in the box after Jesmond failed to clear a routine cross. The goal, all toe-poke and desperation, made sense of everything: Kirkby on the up, Jesmond’s confidence fragile enough that one cheap concession could feel like a verdict.

Jesmond needed a response, and it came from a corner, which felt like cheating given how little they had created from open play. Jordy Janzen-Westra swung it in with the sort of whip the first hour had lacked, and Folco Ambrosio met it with a firm near-post header. The same Ambrosio had a hand in a goal against Hitchin the other day; this one was his own, and it changed the atmosphere in the ground entirely.

The final half-hour was open without ever being frantic. Kirkby pushed for the winner they deserved on the night, Jesmond looked happy to hold what they had. A point each, 47 and 43 on the board, keeps the table exactly as it was: separated by five places and a shrug.

There is no time to sulk, no time to polish that equaliser into a turning point. Just a reset, a cycle of kit, and another go.
