Wednesbury Athletic 2–0 Aigburth FC: Brejeiro strikes again
Wednesbury Athletic's attack has spent much of the autumn sounding like a kettle that never quite gets to boil. Not tonight. Not on Tuesday 1 September.
The first half was exactly the sort of watch that makes you question your life choices, until the 45th minute, when Ethan Coverdale pulled a pass back from the byline and Josimar Brejeiro did what Josimar Brejeiro does. One touch, one swing of the right boot, and the ball was in the corner before Aigburth's goalkeeper had finished deciding which way to dive. Look, a goal on the stroke of half-time is one thing: a goal on the stroke of half-time from a man who scored in the 45th minute against Hitchin on 16 August is starting to look like a habit.
Aigburth, to be fair, shuffled out for the second half looking less like a side marooned in 14th and more like a side who remembered they once beat someone. They had the ball for long stretches, passed it sideways with the conviction of a committee, and generally made Wednesbury work without ever making them panic. That is the polite way of saying they did not test the goalkeeper.
The game needed a second goal to feel real, and it arrived in the 88th minute. Samuel Davenport, who had spent the evening doing the unglamorous stuff, stood over a free kick, delivered it onto Russell Whitlock's head, and Whitlock did the rest. I reckon it was only fair. Whitlock has been laying on goals for others all month, including a miserable 0-5 at Wessex, so it felt right he finally got one himself.
Wednesbury sit in eighth. Aigburth remain in 14th, now looking over their shoulder with a growing sense of unease. Both sides are back at it soon, Matchday 39, which at least means nobody has time to dwell. Football's great mercy: there is always another game, and usually it comes before you have finished moaning about the last one.
