Wellsford Athletic 1–2 Mancunia FC: ninety minutes of graft

To my mind, a top-of-the-table clash in August rarely delivers a classic, but this one was more Salford than Sorrento, a gritty, attritional affair decided by the finest of margins. Wellsford Athletic, sitting third on 58 points, welcomed a Mancunia side just two points behind them in fourth on Friday 28 August, and the visitors left with a precious 2-1 victory that reshapes the promotion picture.

The game had barely settled when Mancunia struck. On two minutes, a route-one ball caused chaos in the Wellsford box, and Ado Olawoyin-Bashir was sharpest to poke home from close range. It was a dreadful start for the hosts, a goal that changed the entire complexion of the contest before the home crowd had even found their voice. Wellsford’s recent good form counted for nothing as they chased the game from the outset, and Mancunia, with no discernible pattern to their own results, were happy to sit deep and absorb pressure.

The equaliser arrived on 20 minutes, and it was a fine team goal. Adriano Crialese, drifting inside from the flank, slipped a perfectly weighted pass through the defence for Femi Kabongo-Mukendi, who finished with a cool, low drive across the keeper. It was a goal that restored a semblance of order, and the game settled into a tense, midfield battle. Wellsford, buoyed by the leveller, began to dominate possession but lacked a cutting edge, and the sides went in level at the break.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Wellsford probing and Mancunia threatening on the break. The winner, however, was a hammer blow. With the game deep into stoppage time and the home side committed forward, Olawoyin-Bashir turned provider, his cross from the right misjudged by the Wellsford defence and falling to Stanley Bagshawe, who swept home from six yards. The away end erupted: the home side slumped. It was a cruel ending for a Wellsford side that had done much to merit a point, but their profligacy in front of goal had ultimately told. Mancunia, who had previous winners from Bagshawe and Olawoyin-Bashir in their ranks this season, once again found the decisive contribution when it mattered.
