Stepney FC 1–0 Marlborough United: the chase begins

Fabiano Caetano provided a rare moment of clarity for Wessex United on Thursday 27 August. He scored twice to secure a 2-2 draw against Jesmond AFC, though the result leaves Wessex exactly where they started. It was a tidy performance (for a draw), if somewhat undermined by the conceding of two goals.

The table has shifted slightly at the top. Marlborough United remain in first place with 62 points, despite a 1-0 defeat to Stepney FC. Stepney now sit on 58 points, level with Wellsford Athletic. Wellsford have moved into second place following a 2-1 victory over Kirkby FC, a result that suggests they might actually be attempting to win the league.

Other results saw Pendle Athletic take a 1-0 win at Wigston FC, while Heaton AFC managed a 2-1 result away at Aigburth FC. Mancunia FC beat Sussex Athletic 2-1. Beeston AFC were the most efficient of the day, winning 2-0 at Edgbaston FC. Hitchin Athletic claimed a narrow 1-0 win against Acton United.

The remaining fixtures were less productive. Wednesbury Athletic and Llandaff Athletic shared the points in a 1-1 draw, while Brixton AFC and Crookes United managed nothing more than a 0-0 blank. It was a match of high tension and very little actual football.

Arthur Fortesque continues to lead the golden boot race with 12 goals. He remains the only player in the league who seems to know where the goal is.

There is little time to reset before the next matchday. Marlborough United will be hoping their lead is sufficient to survive a sudden surge from the chasing pack. Typical really.
