The subplot had one: Alessandro Spada's straight red card in the 45th minute, the last significant act of an opening half that otherwise passed like a meeting that could have been an email.

Brixton arrived fourth on 55 points, a team on the up. Crookes arrived 19th on 28, a team that has made drawing a personality trait. Their earlier meeting finished 1–0 to Brixton, which at least suggested someone would score. Nobody did. Spada, the man who has made a habit of late winners, scored against Stepney, Acton and Aigburth this month. He did not add to that list because he left early, the referee's red card cancelling his output and, in the same gesture, Brixton's plans for the second half.

From the 46th minute onward, the game changed shape. Brixton's ten men dropped deeper, the midfield disappearing behind the ball, leaving Crookes to push into space that kept opening and then closing. In fairness, Crookes did have moments. They had the ball, they had the territory, they had everything except the final decision. For a 19th-place side on a run of draws, that is the difference between escaping a fight and just waving at it from the ropes.

The 0–0 keeps Brixton fourth but it tastes worse than a 0–0 should. They had the quality to win it before the red card, and after it they had only the hope that Crookes would remain themselves. Crookes obliged. One point each, and both sides left with something they already possessed.

The next matchday arrives tomorrow because this league does not allow anyone to stew. Brixton will want Spada back and, more than that, they will want to remember how to score before the 90th minute. Crookes will want to remember what a win feels like. They drew again, which means they already know.
