Wessex United 2–2 Jesmond AFC: the inevitable divide

A point apiece at the County Ground, and a point that suits nobody. Wessex United and Jesmond AFC shared four goals on Thursday 27 August, Matchday 33, a result that leaves both sides exactly where they were: 11th and 10th, separated by a single point. For Wessex, another draw in a season that has become an exercise in symmetry. For Jesmond, a team in dreadful form, at least a response.

The first half passed without a goal, but not without shape. Wessex pressed high and forced Jesmond into hurried clearances, and for a while it looked as though their earlier 1-0 win in the reverse fixture might repeat itself in spirit. Jesmond held on, though, and the game properly began after the interval.

On 62 minutes, Fabiano Caetano scored the goal his movement had been threatening all evening. Borja Morales-Otero found him in the channel, Caetano took one touch to set himself, then placed the ball low past the keeper. It was a goal born of patience, not power, and for a moment it looked the part of a winner.

Jesmond equalised within four minutes. Wilson Arden-Hughes, a striker with a temperament for the right time and place, got ahead of his marker to meet Jordy Janzen-Westra's cross, and the ball was in before any appeal could arrive. That goal flipped the mood entirely. Jesmond, suddenly buoyant, pushed on, and on 75 minutes Linus Culverwell turned in Lucas Lockhart's through ball. The away side had scored twice in nine minutes and now led.

Wessex had not finished. Caetano, whose trajectory had already seen him providing an assist just the previous day, was on hand to meet George Abbotswick's corner with a clean header on 85 minutes. His second of the game, a quiet little collection, and a point that felt like a defeat for both teams.

The draw was entirely in keeping with Wessex's season. They have drawn everything in sight, and this was another one. Jesmond will wonder how they let a lead slip from a corner, but their form demands they take something. Tomorrow brings the next matchday. Neither side has time to dwell, which is probably just as well.
