Heaton AFC 3–3 Wessex United: a predictable outcome

Heaton AFC and Wessex United did not so much play a football match on Wednesday 26 August as continue a condition. Two clubs whose recent form reads like a printing error, having split points with almost everyone, produced a 3–3 that somehow still felt like a surrender for both sides. The aggregate over their two meetings this season: one point each. The league will not be short of symmetry.

Wessex United struck early and with purpose. Élton Brejo-Alegre, enjoying a reasonably prolific August, collected Rafe Endecott's pass in the 9' and finished with the calm of a man who has done this before. He has, in fact, found the net twice in a week. Heaton looked sluggish, perhaps still recovering from their own habit of sharing points.

The equaliser arrived at 42', Ingmar Schlüter rising to meet Quentin Egremont's delivery. There was a murmur about offside, but the officials waved it through and the scoreboard obliged. One apiece at the break, and if you squinted you could see the structural shape of a comfortable 1–1 already forming.

The second half declined to cooperate. Jorge Cifuentes-Bedoya, who spent the previous matchday providing assists, scored Heaton's second two minutes after the restart. Egremont, appearing frequently in the final third, supplied the pass. Heaton led. Lawrence Dollman hauled Wessex level at 61', and Egremont finally scored himself at 75' to make it 3–2.

Then the 90'. A corner, a leap, a Jandir Calheiros header, and the draw that had felt inevitable since approximately the 10th minute arrived on schedule.

The numbers tell you what happened. They don't tell you why two teams this evenly matched keep finding each other. At this point it would be rude to expect anything else.
