Marlborough United maintained their position at the summit with a 2-1 win at Jesmond on Monday 24 August. The result avoids the drama of a collapse: the visitors were top, the hosts eighth, and their previous meeting had ended 4-1. It was, by the numbers, a tighter afternoon than that, though the record cares little for the arc of the narrative.

For fifteen minutes the match was a deadlock of familiar shape. Jesmond had spent the month splitting points, and Marlborough had seemingly caught the same contagion: two sides sensing their way through a terraced husk of a contest. At sixteen minutes, Myrddin Bevan ended that. Having limped off injured in late August, the goal felt like a reasonably measured return. For twenty minutes it looked like a point might hold. But Henrik Brandt had the look of a man with unfinished arithmetic. On 90 minutes, he took a free kick from a standing start, assisted by Akin Mosibudi, to make it 1-2. The goal had the quality of a silent third man in an argument: United needed it, took it, and left.

Two clubs move to Matchday 31 with no time to mull the margins. The numbers suggest Marlborough United are above these frictions. The unquiet part of the table hopes this was one of those afternoons that follows a team instead of letting go.
