Edgbaston 2–1 Pendle: three in a row
Edgbaston FC kept the momentum going on Sunday 23 August, securing a 2-1 win over Pendle Athletic. It was their third win on the bounce. They managed it with a certain level of composure, despite the inevitable period where they looked like they might accidentally give the lead back.
Stepney FC kept pace at the top, recording a 2-1 result against Crookes United. This puts them on 50 points, three behind league leaders Marlborough United. Marlborough did not extend their advantage, settling for a 1-1 draw with Heaton AFC. Wellsford Athletic remain in third on 48 points after a 2-1 defeat to Aigburth FC.
The goals remain a somewhat rare commodity. Arthur Fortesque has 12 goals. He is essentially the only man in the league who seems to remember where the goal is located.
Elsewhere, the day was defined by a collective inability to find a winning goal. Hitchin Athletic and Mancunia FC played out a 1-1 draw. Wednesbury Athletic and Beeston AFC finished with the same score. Wessex United and Acton United also shared the spoils in a 1-1 affair.
Llandaff Athletic managed to avoid the trend, edging out Jesmond AFC 3-2. Brixton AFC were less fortunate, losing 1-0 at home to Sussex Athletic. Wigston FC and Kirkby FC provided the most entertainment of the afternoon, trading blows in a 2-2 draw.
We go again tomorrow.
