Hitchin Athletic 1–1 Mancunia FC: a faithful symmetry

Having played out a 1–1 earlier in the season, Hitchin Athletic and Mancunia FC spent Sunday 23 August proving that a draw can be inherited as faithfully as a first name. In a league that plays every day, a share of the points is less a full stop than a comma, and there was something quietly fitting about the way both sides insisted on the punctuation.

Mancunia arrived with the sixth-best record in the division and the confidence that tends to travel with it; Hitchin, fifteenth, had the memory of a recent win to lean on and, more usefully, the memory of a header. It took until the 37th minute for the pattern to break. Arthur Trent, crossing with the kind of purpose that suggested he had been thinking about it all afternoon, found Olivier Bachelard, who rose and met the ball with a clean header of the sort that makes a defence question its wages. Bachelard had already scored against Stepney and Marlborough in the days beforehand; this goal, struck against a side in good nick, carried the air of an inheritance coming due.

The second half became the sort of weary stretch the scoreline deserved. Mancunia, for all their league position, found Hitchin arranged like a keep-out sign, and for a while the 1–0 looked capable of surviving on stubbornness alone. The equaliser, when it came, arrived through the least stubborn element on the pitch: a penalty. Manabu Imai stepped up in the 77th minute and converted with the calm of a man handed a responsibility he had no intention of declining. The score read 1–1, same as it had in the earlier meeting, same as it would finish.

The faithful symmetry of it will annoy Mancunia more than it pleases them; Hitchin, whose table position grants them no right to be picky, will take the point and the quiet pride it carries.
