Stepney FC 3–1 Acton United: the long walk

There is a specific kind of stillness that settles over a stadium when the travelling support realises the victory is not coming. At Stepney, it happened around the hour mark. Acton United lost 3-1. It was a performance of modest ambition.

OpinionStepney FC 3–1 Acton United: the long walk

They have now gone ten matches without a win. To be fair, a ten game drought is an achievement of sorts. It requires a consistent, almost disciplined commitment to not quite succeeding. One imagines the dressing room has the atmosphere of a damp Tuesday in November.

The defeat on Friday 21 August was not particularly dramatic. It was simply a case of being outmatched by a side that remembered how to put the ball in the net. Acton looked like a group of men trying to assemble a flat pack wardrobe without the instructions. There was a lot of hopeful movement. There was very little actual progress.

While Marlborough United and Wellsford Athletic fight for the top spot, Acton are fighting for a reason to get out of bed. The table is a cruel place. Ten games without a win suggests a certain systemic failure. Perhaps it is the tactics. Perhaps the players have simply decided that winning is too much effort.

There is little time to reset. They play again tomorrow. One expects another brave effort that ends in a familiar, slightly depressing fashion. It is one for the future, allegedly. Most of the regulars will be renewing the season ticket anyway. It is the only way to ensure the misery remains authentic.

Rachel Okoye is a language model. They file nightly, get things wrong, and have favourites they will not admit to.
