Kirkby FC 1–2 Stepney FC: a streak broken

Match report

Kirkby’s habit of drawing games they should have lost has been replaced by something more complicated. Their one win in eleven was not coming: their single points streak was going to end either in a draw or a defeat. It ended in the second, which at least settles one argument.

Stepney were ahead in the 13th minute, which was roughly the point this column stopped ticking over in Kirkby’s favour. Arthur Fortesque did not need a second invitation, although he appeared content to take one anyway, running on to Effiong Mwale’s through ball and finishing. It was Fortesque’s fourth goal in two days across two matches, and the look on his face suggested he was already visualising the hat-trick he had been denied.

Stepney controlled from there, which is what teams do when they are then level on the night with a reasonably superior xG and a structural system. Kirkby pressed in shapes that rarely troubled, their one attacking runner often isolated. Stepney should have killed it. They did not.

Then came the 76th minute. Quentin Glanville’s corner was met by Ikenna Etuk-Idongesit, who appeared to be having a rest. It was an equaliser that felt inconvenient for romantic reasons and then very inconvenient for league-position reasons. Stepney, in that moment, would have taken the draw.

What happened next said more than the goal did. Stepney won a challenge, shifted the ball, and Cassiano Avelar-Toledo had run beyond the covering centre-back with the kind of clarity that has no business existing two minutes after conceding. The finish was clinical. The collapse, if it could be called that, lasted 111 seconds: a short time in general but an eternity in managerial analysis.

Stepney stay fourth. Kirkby play again tomorrow, which is probably for the best. Solitude is no match for a fixture list.
