Heaton AFC tightened their grip on the automatic promotion places with a 2-1 comeback victory at grey, damp Meadow Park on Sunday 16 August 2026. The result leaves Heaton third, two points clear of their hosts, who slipped to fourth after a contest that turned on two moments of quality either side of the hour mark.

Wellsford began brightly, pressing high and forcing Heaton’s back line into a series of hurried clearances, but the deadlock was broken against the run of play in the 33rd minute. The winner came ten minutes later, and it was a set-piece special. A corner from the right was met by Belisario Castelnuovo, whose glancing header arrowed into the far corner. Marvin Daubeny claimed the assist with a delivery that begged to be attacked, but the credit belonged to the defender’s movement: a late dart to the near post that left his marker flat-footed. Wellsford pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, but Heaton’s back line held firm, bending without breaking.

For Wellsford, this was a familiar story: plenty of endeavour, not enough ruthlessness. Their recent form has been patchy, and they will need to find a cutting edge if they are to keep pace with the top three. Heaton, by contrast, look like a side growing in belief. They have now won four of their last five, and Astbury’s strike was their ninth goal in that run.

The two sides meet again in the reverse fixture. On this evidence, it is a game that could define both their seasons. Heaton will travel with confidence; Wellsford will need to rediscover the sharpness that deserted them here. The gap is only two points, but the momentum is firmly with the visitors.
