The 9th minute had the only goal, and it was enough. Nicolò Consalvi, who I currently rank as the league’s most prolific header of a football, powered home from a corner, with Fulbert Cornudet supplying the delivery. In this league, you take the three points and you ask questions later.

Before this one, the numbers told a story of two sides heading in opposite directions. Sussex Athletic sat 13th, blowing hot and cold. Jesmond AFC sat 4th, drawing everything in sight. The league’s most patient side met its most volatile. The result was a test of character, and Sussex passed.

The goal itself was a simple thing, which is why it worked. Cornudet’s cross was precise, inviting, and Consalvi attacked it with the kind of intent that makes defenders wince. In fairness, Jesmond will feel they deserved a point, but their breakdown in the final third means the league table does not award points for deserved.

For Sussex, the challenge now is consistency. They play again tomorrow, as this league always does. There is no time to stew, only time to reset. If Consalvi keeps scoring and the defence keeps this shape, a mid-table finish is not a dream. It is a calculation.
