Acton United 1–2 Crookes United: a timely escape

The match began with the muted intensity of a relegation battle, both sides struggling for form and desperate for separation. It was Crookes who struck first in the 15th minute. A move down the left saw Sebastian Dewhurst deliver a cross to the far post, where Bernardo Bellanca rose unmarked to plant a header back across goal. It was an efficient finish, rewarding a bright opening spell from the visitors.

Acton responded with a period of sustained pressure, but the Crookes backline held firm. The home side's best chance came just after the half-hour mark, when a deflected shot forced a sharp save. The score remained 1-0 at the break, and the visitors were the happier side, having weathered the storm (and the wind).

Any hopes of an Acton revival were extinguished just seconds after the interval. From a corner swung in by Attilio DeAngelis, Joseph Brightwell climbed highest at the near post to flick a glancing header into the top corner. It was a ruthless blow, giving Crookes a 2-0 lead with the game barely back under way.

Acton did pull one back in the 89th minute when Francisco Barreiro collected a pass from Aimé Ancelin and slotted home from close range, setting up a briefly tense finale. Crookes held on, seeing out four minutes of stoppage time to seal a vital three points.
