Heaton AFC 2–1 Sussex Athletic: a late arrival

Heaton AFC beat Sussex Athletic 2-1 on Saturday 15 August 2026, Matchday 21, and the scoreline did more work than the performance. Heaton had spent recent weeks collecting draws; Sussex had spent them doing much the same, so the early exchanges had the look of two sides waiting for someone else to make the first mistake.

Costa Drobnak made it 1-0 on 26 minutes, finishing from open play after Hubert Maitland’s pass, and the goal mattered because it gave Heaton something they had not recently possessed: a lead to protect. Drobnak has a habit of arriving late, having scored in the 90th minute against Kirkby three days earlier, but this one came early enough to change the shape of the afternoon.

Sussex Athletic were not there to be scenery. They equalised on 81 minutes when Archie Westbrook headed in from a corner, Bautista Carrasco-Páez supplying the delivery, and the timing had a particular cruelty to it. The winner arrived at 90 minutes, from Cyril Basildon in open play, with Belisario Castelnuovo the provider. Basildon’s recent record includes an assist and a booking in the same match against Edgbaston, so there is a certain completeness to his afternoon now. The 2-1 scoreline was the same as the earlier meeting between these sides, which may or may not be a pattern, but Heaton will take it either way.

Tomorrow brings Matchday 22, and there is no time to admire the arithmetic. Heaton will need to find a way to win without depending on the 90th minute, or at least to keep their goalkeeper occupied. Sussex will wonder how a corner turned into a defeat. The answer is in the scoreline, as it usually is.
