Sussex Athletic 1–1 Crookes United: a shared burden

In the old annuals, a goalless first half was described as a conversation between two cautious men. Sussex Athletic and Crookes United, 1–1 at the final whistle on Friday 14 August, spent the first forty-five minutes proving the theory and the second forty-five arguing about it.

The table before kick-off had its own quiet joke. Sussex sat 13th on 22 points, drawing more than they would like. Crookes sat 20th on 16, drawing everything in sight. Their earlier meeting finished 2–0, which is to say it belonged to a different species of match entirely, one with a winner.

Crookes, to their credit, had not come to defend. They pressed and shifted, making the afternoon feel like beating water in a mortar. The breakthrough arrived from the one place a team can always trust. In the 52nd minute, Alistair Grosvenor swung a corner and Fulbert Cornudet rose to head it in. Cornudet has spent this month scoring in 1–0 wins, three of them in a row, and for a while this looked like a fourth. The goal had the resonance of habit.

But Crookes have been drawing everything in sight for a reason. They do not panic. In the 85th minute, Donkor Darko-Mensah slipped a pass through and Allan Cariri-Filho finished in open play with the calm of a man who has seen this script before. 1–1, and the point was pinched, not gifted.

The result keeps Sussex in the great grey shrug of mid-table and gives Crookes a little more air above the bottom. Neither side lost, which in this league is sometimes the most honest outcome available. Football was always a story about something else, and on Friday the something else was the labour of a point.

Tomorrow brings Matchday 21. Both sides will do it all over again, because that is the nature of the beast, and the water in the mortar will still be there, waiting to be beaten.
