Heaton took the lead in the 16th minute. Helmuth Engelhardt, who appears incapable of going a full match without scoring at the moment, turned in a corner from Macsen Conway-Hughes. It was his second goal in two days, following Wednesday's late strike against Kirkby, and it gave Heaton something to protect. They would spend the next 74 minutes doing exactly that.

Then came the moment that shaped the game. In the 35th minute, Ingmar Schlüter was shown a straight red card. He had spent the previous day collecting a booking and an assist against Kirkby, so the red card felt less like an aberration and more like the final item on a to-do list. Heaton now had ten men, a one-goal lead and 55 minutes of open football to survive. They retreated into a low block. Mancunia pushed forward, full-backs high, and the second half became a lesson in organised suffering.

Mancunia had the ball, the territory and, as the minutes ticked on, the look of a side that had forgotten the door code. Heaton's goalkeeper made saves. Defenders threw themselves at things. The clock moved slowly. By the 85th minute it seemed the visitors might manage a famous win, because that is what this league does to you.

João Vasque had other ideas. With 90 minutes on the board, he collected Harry Beresford-Hope's pass and finished. It was his third goal in a fortnight, and the equaliser rescued a point for Mancunia while denying Heaton the kind of result that would have felt like a heist.

Both sides play again tomorrow. Mancunia will hope their form has not gone cold. Heaton will simply hope Schlüter has a quieter day. Typical really: the league never lets you dwell.
