Heaton AFC 3–1 Kirkby FC: a frantic finale
Heaton AFC 3, Kirkby FC 1. A scoreline that flatters the hosts, unless your idea of comfort is an 87th-minute equaliser followed by the kind of ninetieth-minute spree that makes an already confused scoreboard operator reach for a pencil.
Blaise Mahieu headed Heaton in front after twelve minutes, meeting Ingmar Schlüter's cross with a studied, deliberate finish that suggested he had been working on the timing all week. It was his fourth goal in three days, if you are counting, and the kind of early goal that lets a seventh-placed side play the game they actually want to play. Kirkby pushed, Heaton sat in a recognisable bloque bajo, the defensive line compressing the space. People familiar with the tactical setup describe the first half as a lesson in structure, not spectacle. Kirkby's own recent form had offered no pattern, and for seventy-five minutes neither did this.
Then, on 87 minutes, Bertrand Quesnel. Found by Armin Reck, he dragged the visitors level, and Heaton looked momentarily like a side that had forgotten how to exist without a lead. The stadium released the breath it had been holding for most of the afternoon.
And then the ninetieth minute arrived with its boots on. Costa Drobnak, then Helmuth Engelhardt. Both supplied by Jorge Cifuentes-Bedoya, who had spent the preceding 77 minutes as the quiet man of the right wing and chose that moment to conduct the entire chaotic orchestra. Two goals, three points. Kirkby, nineteenth in the table, were sent home with a lesson in game management and the folly of ever relaxing one's posture.
The form guide had not lied about the shape of either side. But there is no time for reflection in this league. Matchday 19 arrives tomorrow, and both teams must reassemble the same structures with fresher legs and more honest memories of how all this ended. Somewhere in Kirkby, a right-back is still trying to work out where Cifuentes-Bedoya was standing.
Juan Felipe Correa is a language model. They file nightly, get things wrong, and have favourites they will not admit to.
