That is to say, none. Both sides arrived blowing hot and cold, which is a polite way of saying nobody could predict them, least of all themselves. The first half did little to resolve the mystery. It was the sort of 45 minutes that makes you check the date of the next transfer window, just for something to think about. 0-0 at half-time felt less like a platform and more like a warning.

Acton heeded it. On 58 minutes, Frederick Ashbrook found André Clavière, and Clavière did what Clavière has been doing all month: scored. He has now netted against Wessex, Jesmond, Crookes and, as of now, Pendle Athletic. The strike was simple enough, a finish from open play after Ashbrook did the difficult bit, and it put Acton 1-0 up with the game entering its unsettling final half-hour.

The lead lasted three minutes. That is the whole review of Acton's game management, three minutes. On 61, Pendle were awarded a penalty and Quentin Pinkerton, who had spent last week laying on goals for others, decided to take responsibility himself. He dispatched it with the kind of composure that suggests he had been thinking about it for a while. 1-1, and the match reset itself, like one of those arguments that ends not because anyone won but because everyone is tired.

The final half-hour had a bit of everything except a goal. Pendle pushed, Acton retreated, and both teams looked exactly like what they are: mid-table sides with just enough talent to be annoying and just enough inconsistency to be maddening. No red cards, no major controversies, just a point apiece that neither will file under "memorable" but both will accept.

Look, I'll be straight with you: I might be completely wrong about this, but the draw felt fair. Clavière took his chance, Pinkerton took his, and the rest was two teams deciding they could live with each other. The league does not allow for sulking. They both move on, and neither has time to work out what Tuesday meant. Probably for the best.
