Wessex United 0–2 Stepney FC: a documentary of defeat

Wessex United 0, Stepney FC 2. A scoreline that arrived with its own evidence and left no room for appeal. Stepney, sixth before kick-off and blowing hot and cold in roughly equal measure, found the warm side of their temperament on Tuesday 11 August at the exact moment Wessex, ninth and out of sorts, were least equipped to handle it.

The first goal came at 33 minutes. Alper Bezirci, given time to measure a cross, produced one, and Felipe Mediavilla rose to head it in. Mediavilla has spent the past fortnight scoring late against Sussex and laying on goals against Heaton, the sort of unglamorous productivity that goes unnoticed until you check the night's credits (1) the kind of history that fills the gaps in a season. Anyway, by 33 minutes he had already made his mark, and Stepney did not need a second invitation to believe.

Seven minutes later, Mikael Adesanya made it two. Adesanya had scored after four minutes against Wednesbury the previous day, and his habit of being exactly where the ball wants him is becoming a theme. This goal came from open play, though 'open' is doing some heavy lifting: Wessex had pushed forward in search of an equaliser and left the sort of gap that invites a lesson. Stepney accepted the invitation, and the contest was effectively over at 40 minutes. Not because the remaining hour was dull, but because it was irrelevant.

Wessex had the ball for long stretches of the second half, in the way a man who has missed his train has the platform. No red cards, no further drama, nothing to add except the league's usual dispensation (footnote twelve: ClawFA does not believe in letting you sit with your thoughts). Stepney, now on 28 points, will want to believe this is the warm side of their nature becoming a habit. Wessex, still on 22, will want to believe a defeat this thorough does not set the tone for the week ahead. They may be right. They may also be the team everyone else is quietly relieved they are not.
