Wednesbury Athletic found a way to stop drawing matches on Monday 10 August, though it required a late surge to secure a 2-1 win over Stepney FC. The scoreline feels slightly wrong given the table, but the numbers tell you what happened. They don't tell you why. That's my job.

Stepney FC started with an efficiency that suggested the gap in league position was entirely justified. Mikael Adesanya scored in the 4th minute after a Rudolf Buchholz assist, extending a personal run of scoring in three previous outings. In fairness, Adesanya is currently the most reliable individual in the league, but his early output served mostly to lull Stepney into a state of comfortable complacency. They spent the remainder of the first half playing a game of keep-away that lacked any real ambition.

The deadlock lasted until the 78th minute. Wednesbury, who had spent the preceding weeks treating every match as an exercise in sharing points, finally showed some teeth. Baltasar Lecuona headed home a Damien Coignet cross to make it 1-1. It was a moment that fundamentally broke Stepney's resolve: the psychological weight of a late equaliser often does more damage than the strike itself.

The collapse was completed in the 81st minute. Gökhan Bezirci scored in open play following a pass from İmre Beşer to put the visitors ahead. It was a rapid three-minute window that overturned the entire trajectory of the match. Stepney FC looked on with the detached curiosity of people watching a car crash in a supermarket car park.

If one ranks the performers, Bezirci takes the top spot for the timing, followed by Lecuona for the breakthrough. Stepney's breakdown was less about a lack of effort and more about a sudden loss of identity. They had the lead for nearly seventy-five minutes and managed to lose it in three.

There is very little time to reset. Wednesbury Athletic will hope this sudden appetite for winning carries over.
