Wellsford Athletic 2–2 Kirkby FC: a habit of inconsistency

Cecil Cottingham provided the early spark for the visitors. In the 14th minute, he converted a pass from Lourens Buisma-Veld to make it 0-1. It was a tidy piece of business that suggested Kirkby might actually find a way to win, which is usually where the optimism ends. Cottingham is currently the most dangerous individual on the pitch, though he remains a liability: a man capable of a brace and a second-minute red card in the same week.

Wellsford spent much of the first half looking like they had forgotten how to pass. In fairness, they managed to find the equaliser in the 41st minute when Tobias Renouf turned in a delivery from Dikeledi Ayodele-Olufemi. It was a goal that arrived just in time to save the hosts from a particularly depressing half-time interval.

The second half followed a similar pattern of sporadic effort. Cottingham struck again in the 63rd minute to restore the lead for Kirkby, a goal that shifted the pressure back onto the Wellsford attack. For a period, Kirkby looked comfortable, possessing a lead they seemed destined to keep, right up until the final minute.

Kohei Asano ensured the points were shared in the 90th minute. Asano has developed a habit of scoring early or late, and this open-play strike was no exception. It was a clinical piece of output that rescued a point for Wellsford, though it left the Kirkby travelling support staring blankly at the rain.

In terms of individual rankings, Cottingham was the standout for the visitors, while Asano proved to be the only reliable component of the Wellsford forward line. The breakdown of the match suggests two sides who are equally capable of brilliance and inexplicable lapses in concentration.
