Marlborough United 1–3 Stepney FC: red card, no problem

Match report

Marlborough United arrived on Saturday 8 August with a habit of drawing everything in sight. They left with a 1-3 defeat that felt entirely out of character for the league leaders, yet perfectly in character for a side that has forgotten how to actually win a game.

Stepney FC started with a level of individual output that made the home side look like they were still in the warm-up. Effiong Mwale opened the scoring in the 3rd minute, courtesy of Damien Compère-Morel. By the 9th, Alper Bezirci had doubled the lead. In a direct comparison of quality, Bezirci was the standout individual on the pitch for the first twenty minutes. In fairness, he is a genuine talent, though he spent the remaining 65 minutes of the match watching from the stands after a straight red card in the 25th.

One would assume a man advantage provides a breakdown of the opposition. Instead, Marlborough continued their trend of doing very little. Stepney, despite being ten men, managed to add a third via Compère-Morel in the 57th. Baruti Akoto-Asante eventually pulled one back in the 72nd, a goal that served more as a consolation prize than a comeback.

If we are ranking the performances, Mwale and Compère-Morel sit comfortably at the top. Marlborough, meanwhile, remain the league leaders, though they are beginning to look like leaders who have lost their way. Typical, really.
