Marlborough United are currently occupying a joint top spot in the table. It is a precarious position, of course, but they seem to have found a way to make it look easy. The 3-1 win over Crookes United on Monday 3 August felt less like a tactical masterclass and more like a team simply deciding they had seen enough of the opposition.

It was efficient. It was professional. It was almost a bit boring in its inevitability. They played with the kind of confidence usually reserved for people who have already finished their chores. One gets the sense they are no longer fighting against the tide, but are instead just drifting comfortably toward the title with a polite smile on their faces.

Crookes United, to be fair, tried their best. They provided a spirited effort for about twenty minutes before realising that Marlborough had essentially turned the pitch into a very large waiting room. The goal difference is beginning to look healthy, though health in this league is usually a temporary condition.
