Jesmond AFC 0–0 Heaton AFC: the stalemate at the top

Sunday 2 August was a day for the scoreless. Four matches ended 0-0, including the clash between Jesmond AFC and Heaton AFC. It was a cautious affair (which is a polite way of saying it was grim) that left both sides on 16 points. Jesmond AFC remain top of the table by virtue of goal difference, though Marlborough United sit alongside them on 16 points after a 1-1 draw at Beeston AFC.

Edgbaston FC provided the afternoon's most decisive result. They travelled to Kirkby FC and came away with a comfortable 3-1 win. Mancunia FC were similarly efficient, brushing Brixton AFC aside with a 3-0 victory. It was a professional performance, if slightly lacking in soul.

Llandaff Athletic managed a narrow 1-0 win over Crookes United, while Stepney FC edged out Acton United 2-1. Sussex Athletic also claimed all three points, beating Wessex United 2-1. The rest of the league offered little in the way of fireworks. Hitchin Athletic and Wigston FC, and Pendle Athletic and Aigburth FC, both failed to find the net. Wellsford Athletic and Wednesbury Athletic ended their day in the same fashion.

The Golden Boot race is currently a modest affair. Wilson Astbury leads the pack with five goals. It is a respectable tally, though perhaps not one that suggests a historic haul is imminent.

With the top three teams now locked on 16 points, the table is precariously balanced. There is little time to reset before tomorrow's fixtures, where one misplaced pass could likely shift the leadership again. Typical, really.
