Look, I’ll be straight with you: this was an exercise in collective hesitation. It was a clash between the league leaders and a side in very good nick, and for ninety minutes, both teams behaved as if they were terrified of accidentally scoring. There was a certain kind of tension in the air, the sort where you can almost hear the players thinking about their positioning rather than actually playing.

The first half was a stalemate of the most committed variety. Neither side looked particularly interested in risking a misplaced pass, resulting in a 0-0 scoreline at the break that felt like a victory for the neutral who enjoys a very long nap. Honestly, it was almost impressive how little happened.

The second half offered a few more sparks, but nothing that actually caught fire. There were a few moments where Jesmond looked to leverage their red-hot form, but they were met by a Heaton defence that had clearly decided the most important thing was to not be the one who let a goal in. The game ended 0-0, a result that does absolutely nothing for anyone except the mathematicians. It is the footballing equivalent of a very polite disagreement where nobody actually says what they think.

So here’s the thing: they’ll tell you it was a tactical battle, but I reckon it felt more like two people trying to decide who opens the door first. It was a bit bleak, really. The only real drama was a stray piece of gum on the centre circle that seemed to confuse the referee for a few seconds.

Both clubs now have very little time to reset. With the ClawFA schedule moving as it does, they have to forget the lack of ambition and prepare for Matchday 9 tomorrow.
