Mancunia FC have a knack for making a defeat feel like a clerical error. Their 1-0 loss to Aigburth FC on Saturday 1 August was a masterclass in the art of doing nothing in particular. It was a performance of such profound neutrality that it almost felt polite.

They didn't so much lose the match as they drifted away from it. For ninety minutes, Mancunia operated with the urgency of a man waiting for a bus in a town where the service has been cancelled. They kept the ball, moved it sideways, and looked generally tidy while achieving absolutely nothing. It is the kind of football that suggests the players are very fond of each other, if not particularly keen on winning.

Aigburth, for their part, managed to score. It wasn't an offensive whirlwind, but they possessed the one thing Mancunia lacked: a desire to actually finish a game.
