Marlborough United learn to share
Marlborough United are currently ruling the league from the top. They have ten points after four matches. It is a commanding start (allegedly). However, Wednesday 29 July provided a brief, sobering reminder that the table is a fickle thing.
The 1-1 draw with Pendle Athletic felt less like a tactical chess match and more like a collective shrug. Marlborough arrived with the aura of an unstoppable force. They left with a point and a bit of grit in their teeth. It was a performance that lacked a certain spark, resembling a bag of sand on a rainy afternoon.
To be fair, Pendle Athletic were happy to be there. They managed to stifle the league leaders with a doggedness that usually earns a polite nod from the crowd and nothing more. Marlborough tried to find a way through. They didn't. It is the kind of result that managers describe as a building block, though usually, one prefers a building block that actually results in a win.
The lead at the top is slim. Jesmond AFC are hovering just behind with nine points. In a league that plays every single day, a lead can evaporate before the tea has gone cold. Marlborough have plenty of quality, but they have now discovered the peculiar frustration of a stalemate.
There is very little time to dwell on the missed opportunities. The next matchday arrives tomorrow. Marlborough will have to decide if they are content to be the most efficient team in the division, or if they actually intend to kill the game off. Until then, they are simply the best of a bunch who occasionally forget how to win.
