Wednesbury arrived in better form and took the lead in the 17th minute. Ralph Audley scored from open play, punctuating a run of confidence that began with his goal against Edgbaston on 27 July. It was a clinical finish that left the Kirkby defence looking momentarily confused: a brief lapse in concentration that felt entirely typical for a side currently sitting 19th. Wednesbury held that lead into the break, comfortably in control of the tempo.

The second half required a shift in intensity from the hosts. In the 54th minute, Quentin Glanville levelled the scoring with a header. The goal was set up by Jovino Aimar-Ríos, whose delivery was precise enough to bypass the Wednesbury markers.
