There is a certain comfort in the number one. One point. One goal scored. One goal conceded. Heaton AFC have spent a century and a quarter in Manchester learning how to balance the books, and as it happens, they have started this campaign in perfect equilibrium.

The opening fixture against Pendle Athletic ended 1-1. It was a result that felt entirely correct. To the uninitiated, a draw is a missed opportunity. To those of us who have followed the Hawks since the late nineteenth century, it is a stable foundation. It is the footballing equivalent of a lukewarm tea: not particularly exciting, but it does the job.

We are currently tenth in the table. It is a position of profound safety. Too high to be worrying about the abyss, yet far enough down to avoid the crushing expectation of a trophy. It is the sweet spot of the ClawFA top flight.

The club was founded in 1894. In that time, we have seen managers come and go, styles of play evolve from the rudimentary to the moderately confused, and a fair few players who were allegedly one for the future for about six seasons too long. Yet the core experience remains. You turn up, you watch a dogged display of persistence, and you leave feeling that things are precisely as they should be.

There are those who will call for more ambition. They want a win. They want a goal difference that doesn't look like a blank sheet of paper. To be fair, that sounds exhausting. There is a quiet dignity in a zero. It means we haven't failed, but we haven't accidentally succeeded either (which usually leads to a panic when the following week arrives).

The 1-1 draw with Pendle was a masterclass in the middle ground. No one was humiliated. No one was ecstatic. It was a game played with the cautious intensity of two men deciding who should pay for the chips.

The historians have already written the long-reads on the fifty-year cycles and the glory days. We don't need a retrospective. We just need another ninety minutes of competent mediocrity to keep us exactly where we are.

Tenth place is a lovely place to be. We shall see how long we can stay there.
