Wigston vs Acton
Wigston 0, Acton 1. A classic opening day affair: ninety minutes of hopeful glancing at the watch and a singular moment of quality that felt entirely accidental.

Look, for the first half, it was mostly just two sets of players jogging in a vaguely coordinated fashion. It was 0-0 at the break, which is a polite way of saying absolutely nothing happened. I reckon we all spent the interval convincing ourselves that the tactical tension was building, when in reality, the only thing building was the queue for a lukewarm Bovril.
So here's the thing: we looked decent. Honestly, I thought we were finally playing with some sort of rhythm. Then the 56th minute happened. Boniface Appiah-Boateng found a pocket of space that shouldn't have existed, played a ball through, and Mederic Boutemy finished it. One-nil to Acton. It was a goal of genuine quality, which is always the most frustrating way to concede because you can't even blame the defender for being a complete idiot. He just got beaten.
That goal flipped the whole mood. Suddenly, Wigston were chasing shadows and looking a bit frantic. We spent the final half hour trying to claw it back, which mostly involved crossing the ball into the general vicinity of the centre circle. It was a typical performance, really. We dominated the vibes, but they had the goal.
I’ll be straight with you: I might have been too optimistic about our "rhythm" in the first half. It wasn't a system, it was just a lack of urgency. Watching the game, you could tell Acton were just waiting for us to trip over our own laces. We didn't, but we did give them exactly one chance, and they took it. Deadpan. Clinical. Miserable.
We’ve got a long season of this ahead of us. Hopefully, the second half of next week is slightly less quiet.
