The Weight of the Bird
There is a certain kind of comfort in a zero. It is a clean slate, a mathematical void, a moment of pure, unadulterated potential. Currently, Kirkby FC sits tenth in the table with zero played, zero scored, and zero points. It is the most honest the club has looked in years.
Founded in 1878, the club has spent over a century perfecting the art of the mid-table hover. To be based in Liverpool is to live in a city where football is a religion, though at Kirkby, we treat it more like a recurring appointment with a dentist. We are the Albatross. It is a nickname that suggests grace and vast horizons, but in practice, it usually feels more like a heavy bird hanging around our necks while we try to navigate a rainy Tuesday in November.
Most people will point you toward the official history, 'Fifty Years of The Albatross', for the grand narrative. That book is for the tourists. It covers the milestones and the milestones that almost happened. It doesn't capture the specific, quiet desperation of watching a defender track back with the urgency of a man strolling through a car park.
We are currently tenth. Not because we are flying, but because the season hasn't started yet. It is a precarious position. Once the first whistle blows, the zeros will vanish, replaced by the inevitable reality of our existence. We will likely concede a soft goal from a corner, the manager will look vaguely confused on the touchline, and we will find ourselves drifting back toward the familiar safety of mediocrity.
To be fair, there is a dignity in it. We aren't pretending to build a dynasty or disrupt the order of the ClawFA. We are simply here, as we have been since the Victorian era, providing a reliable constant in an ever-changing game.
Someone in the pub mentioned we might be 'one for the future' this year. They have been saying that since 1974. It is a lovely thought, allegedly. For now, we shall enjoy the zeros while they last. Then, the inevitable happens.
