In my experience, there is a particular kind of silence that descends upon a home crowd when they realise the game has effectively ended before the half-time oranges have arrived, a silence that felt as heavy as a London fog during Acton United’s 1–4 dismantling by Brixton AFC on Thursday 6 August.

Brixton arrived with a reputation for being inconsistently brilliant, but they found a level of clinical precision that Acton, currently languishing in 16th, simply could not mirror. The collapse began in the 19th minute when Kit Vexley scored, a goal that served as a cold reminder of Vexley's recent habit of finding the net. Once the seal was broken, the floodgates opened. Jack Cardew doubled the lead in the 26th minute following a neat piece of work from Elías Mediavilla, and Erhard Engesser added a third in the 41st. It was a goal of cruel timing, arriving just before the interval to ensure Acton United spent the break contemplating the sheer distance between their current form and the top seven.

The second half offered little in the way of a romantic comeback, primarily because Theodore Pinkerton saw red in the 56th minute. This left Acton to defend a three goal deficit with ten men, a task that felt akin to stopping a landslide with a garden rake. Beniamino Quintavalle added a fourth in the 70th minute, punctuating a performance of total dominance from the visitors. Mederic Boutemy did manage a consolation for the hosts in the 77th minute after a ball from André Clavière, but it was the sort of goal that serves merely to stop the scoreline from looking like a cricket result.
