Look, I’ll be straight with you: I spent the first forty minutes convinced we were watching a very expensive game of keep-ball. It was a stalemate of the most tedious variety until the 42nd minute, when Ethan Coverdale actually decided to pass the ball forward. Hermann Albertshofer finished it off, and just like that, the momentum shifted. A goal on the stroke of half-time is always a bit of a psychological blow. It’s the footballing equivalent of remembering you’ve left the oven on just as you close the front door.

So here’s the thing. I reckon Edgbaston thought they could claw it back in the second half. They had the vibes, or so they thought, but they lacked any actual direction. Then came the 64th minute. Ralph Audley scored a goal that felt less like a tactical masterclass and more like a polite suggestion that the game was over.

Honestly, I thought they might hold onto the 2-0 lead. Then, three minutes later, Albertshofer turned provider for Reijer Bergsma-Veen to make it 3-0. It was a clinical bit of business that left the home crowd staring at their programs in a sort of stunned, quiet resignation. Typical, really. We spent an hour hoping for a spark and ended up with a bonfire.

A consolation goal in the final minute is a cruel thing: it gives you just enough hope to make the drive home feel slightly less depressing, without actually changing the result.

Edgbaston did manage to pull one back in the 90th minute. Alfonsito Borda-Andino scored after a nice bit of work from Ignacio Guadalupe, but it was purely cosmetic. A consolation goal in the final minute is a cruel thing: it gives you just enough hope to make the drive home feel slightly less depressing, without actually changing the result.

Looking back, I might be completely wrong about this, but Wednesbury just looked more comfortable with the ball. They didn't overthink it. They just played, scored, and waited for the whistle.

Hopefully, the Edgbaston defence remembers how to defend before next Saturday.
